Well, the semester started, and I received my timetable in my college email inbox. I was pleased to discover that I didn’t have any classes on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Monday morning, I packed my purse with a notebook, a couple pens, highlighters, and my iPod (just in case it got boring) and trudged across campus to the Faculty of Social Science. As I went, I recognized a few people from high school, but I hadn’t spoken to them then, so I couldn’t really speak to them now.

Anyway, my first class was horrible. I got to the enormous lecture room, and it was jam packed to maximum capacity, and it looked like everyone had already formed their cliques. I sat near the front, wondering how everyone already knew each other. Maybe I should have gone to more parties over the last few days.

Luckily, my Monday morning Introduction to Communication Studies was the only class that big. The rest were smaller, and by the end of the week, I had made a few friends. As I left class on Thursday evening, glad that I didn’t have anything else until Monday, I realized how important it had been to me to make friends. I’d been terrified that I was going to be the campus reject.

I almost skipped back to my block, and was welcomed by a near nude Dan Black when I stepped out of the elevator. A small towel hung around his waist preserving his modesty.

“You look gorgeous, Lexi.”

I didn’t stop walking. “Thanks.” He’d been trying to talk to me all week, but I was having none of it. Jace had taught me a very thorough lesson in how not to let myself fall for suave Los Angelino guys, and I had learned. Dan Black could do what he wanted, but I was with Carl and that wasn’t going to change.

When I went to the kitchen later to see what food I had left. Dan was in there frying something.

“What are you doing this evening?” he asked.

“Nothing.” I looked in the cupboard. All I had left was breakfast cereal and a few chocolate cupcakes. I had to go shopping.

“Do you want to try my prawn stir fry?”

I watched him toss noodles into the pan. It did smell good. “So it’s noodles this time?”

“Yes. I made enough for two.”

“Okay.”

I waited in the living room.

“Do you have a girlfriend?” I asked when he brought the food and joined me on the couch.

“No.”

“Why not? All this is wasted on me. You need someone who’ll appreciate it.”

“I’m too much of a player to have just one girl.”

The fact that he’d just admitted that was scary. I picked up my plate of noodles. They smelled divine.

“I’ll be back in a minute,” Dan said. He left the room and returned holding a DVD. “I bought you a movie.”

“I thought you only cooked and watched movies on Friday nights.”

“I know, but no one’s in tonight, so why not?” He put the DVD on and returned to the couch.

“These noodles are amazing.
